Association of Admissions Factors With Student Performance in Preclinical Operative Dentistry

“PAT may predict success in preclinical operative dentistry and DAT predicts success on a didactic exam in the course”

PAT: Perceptual Ability Test

DAT: Dental Admission Test

“However, there was no correlation between students’ GPA and their final exam or preclinical performance”

  • Prediction of Practical Performance

Students had on average 0.81 higher mean faculty score (95%CI = 0.36, 1.27) with each additional increase in their PAT admission score. Additionally, The gap between faculty VS. self-assessment decreased as the PAT score increased, indicating better self-assessment skills.

  • Prediction of Didactic Performance

For the didactic exam, each additional DAT score was associated with 1.07 points higher in their final exam

“Elucidating admissions factors that correlate with these skills is beneficial not only for the admission process, but also teaching students beyond their admission to dental school”
